Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Saturday expressed confidence that the President-elect Mikheil Kavelashvili would play a pivotal role in enhancing the country’s “statehood and sovereignty” and reducing political “radicalism and polarisation”.
In his remarks, Kobakhidze emphasised the transformative impact Kavelashvili's presidency could have on the nation, particularly in restoring the constitutional mission of the presidential institution and fostering unity within the domestic public.
“I would like to congratulate Mikheil Kavelashvili on being elected President of Georgia. Mikheil Kavelashvili's election to this crucial position will make a very important contribution to reinforcing Georgia's statehood and sovereignty, as well as to reducing radicalism and the so-called polarisation in the country”, the PM said.
Kobakhidze underscored the challenges faced by the presidential institution in recent years, criticising what he described as the misuse of the presidency to deepen societal divisions and undermine constitutional order.
“For over two years, Georgia has lacked a President who is both patriotic and mentally and psychologically balanced. In this regard, Mikheil Kavelashvili's presidency will mark a transformative change for our country”, he continued.
The Prime Minister argued that external influences had exacerbated internal divisions, using the presidency as a tool for destabilisation. He expressed confidence that Kavelashvili would restore dignity and purpose to the office.
“Under Mikheil Kavelashvili’s presidency, the institution of the President will regain its constitutional mission and dignity. I wish him success in his role as President of Georgia”, the PM concluded.
