Georgian PM calls for “Nuremberg-like process” to investigate crimes of UNM Gov’t

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday emphasised the need for a thorough investigation into crimes committed under the former United National Movement Government, comparing the process to the Nuremberg Trials held after World War II.
Kobakhidze claimed that the UNM Government, which he had described as an “agent-driven regime”, was responsible for many crimes.
“We must fully reclaim our country, and for this, it is fundamentally important to call things by their proper names. A crime should be called a crime. A foreign agent should be called a foreign agent. These crimes are essentially in plain sight. These include the murder of individuals, systematic torture in prisons, business racketeering, the crimes of the 2008 war, and so on. While all of this is already evident, it still requires further examination to remind society of everything and to call things by their true names”, the PM said.
He accused the UNM Government of being an “externally-controlled bloody regime”.
“We need a kind of Nuremberg process to ensure that Georgia never returns to its dark past, the past we remember so painfully from 2004 to 2012. No one should ever be allowed to bring our country back to the regime that operated before 2012. It was an externally-controlled bloody regime, and its crimes will be investigated within the framework of a parliamentary enquiry commission”, Kobakhidze concluded.
Mamuka Mdinaradze, the Executive Secretary of the ruling Georgian Dream party, early January said a temporary investigative commission would be established in the Georgian Parliament to investigate activities of the former United National Movement “regime” and its officials between 2003 and 2012.
