Parliament official claims there are forces seeking to drag Georgia into chaos

Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Committee on European Integration of the Georgian Parliament, on Tuesday claimed there were forces seeking to drag Georgia into chaos.

In his remarks at a parliamentary plenary session, Makhashvili highlighted the dramatic and, for many, unacceptable and immoral shifts occurring on the world stage.

“The world is changing. It is changing in ways unimaginable and unacceptable to many, even immorally. However, such is the ruthless nature of global politics. There is no place for political charlatans in it. One miscalculated step, and a state can disappear from the face of the earth without anyone even expressing concern”, the Parliament official said.

He asserted that global changes were reaching a logical conclusion, with a “ring of fire” now forming from Ukraine to the Middle East, and further pointed out that the global economy was under immense pressure, with former allies treating each other as enemies

“In this difficult environment, we cannot remain passive observers. Diplomacy is our only weapon. Therefore, when the former President [Salome Zourabichvili] forced the state to discard this sole weapon by refusing to appoint ambassadors, we must urgently correct this mistake and give Georgian diplomats the opportunity to effectively protect Georgia's interests. We are acting in the national interest of Georgia. This is the only star that, if we align with it, will lead us to safety. Any other target, any other star could cost our country dearly”, he noted.

He further emphasised that amid the prevailing global chaos, Georgia was not passively waiting for opportunities but was actively creating them.

Makhashvili underscored that every foreign visit undertaken by the Prime Minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Government, and members of Parliament served as a means to forge new opportunities, introduce beneficial ideas, and initiate large-scale projects.

“But let us not deceive ourselves - there are forces trying to drag Georgia into chaos. These forces have not disappeared. Moreover, this time they are setting up a warm nest on the European continent, hoping to continue lecturing us under the guise of European institutions. Emboldened by this, the opposition is ready to sacrifice everything just to seize power. For them, neither Europe nor America, and most regrettably, not even Georgia's national interests exist. None of these are valuable to them. What is valuable to them are their own narrow political interests, and for this, if necessary, they will slander America, criticise the European Union, and jeopardise Georgia's future”, Makhashvili said.

The official highlighted that peace was not a gift but a responsibility, noting that the Government had repeatedly demonstrated that the Georgian people could rely on the ruling party’s leadership, even in the most challenging times.

“While the opposition, together with its internal and external patrons, is pushing the country towards the abyss, we will responsibly continue the country's development and care for citizens”, he concluded.
