Georgian Parliament Speaker calls for “new page” in Georgia-US relations

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Friday said the Georgian Government was fully prepared to launch a new chapter of strategic partnership with the new US administration.
Papuashvili’s remarks came in response to the recent meeting between Georgia’s First Vice Prime Minister Levan Davitashvili and representatives of the US Department of State.
He emphasised that Georgia had repeatedly demonstrated its position as the most reliable partner of the United States in the region.
“Our goal is to show the new US administration that we are fully prepared to begin a strategic partnership from a new page - one that is not just empty rhetoric, as it was during the Biden administration”, the Speaker said.
“Under the Biden administration, we were offered kind words about being strategic partners, yet, in reality, American funding was used to undermine Georgian democracy. This was done through fraudulent schemes - precisely the kind that were exposed during the Trump administration. The
US must look back, think ahead, and ask itself: is Georgia not its most trustworthy partner in the region?” Papuashvili continued.
Commenting on the topic of sanctions, the Speaker condemned them as arbitrary and unjust.
“As for the so-called sanctions, they are inherently unfair, arbitrary, and contrary not only to the understanding of equal relations between countries but also to the very basic understanding of human rights. Therefore, something that is inherently unjust and arbitrary should not exist at all”, the Speaker noted.
