MEP Michael von der Schulenburg: Georgia should stay away from conflict, time is working in its favour

MEP Michael von der Schulenburg on Tuesday advised Georgia not to get involved in the war in Ukraine, arguing that the conflict - fueled by the EU - was turning against NATO and the European Union and that time was working in Georgia’s favour.

In his interview with Imedi TV, von der Schulenburg referenced a recent report on Ukraine’s EU progress, which, although positive in tone at first, contains strong accusations of corruption and torture, reflecting a shift in the EU’s position.

“The EU says it plans to grant Ukraine membership, but these are just words - we all know that Ukraine will not become a member of the EU. About two weeks ago, a report was published on Ukraine’s progress toward EU membership. The report starts very positively, but then there is extensive discussion of corruption and accusations against the Ukrainian authorities of torture in prisons”, he said.

“I repeat, this is unprecedented in documentation prepared by the EU regarding Ukraine. The EU, which has always been strongly pro-Ukraine, is saying this. First of all, it shows that they now want to distance themselves from Ukraine. Brussels knows that admitting Ukraine into the EU would be extremely costly and would lead to the EU’s collapse”, he continued.

Discussing Georgia’s geopolitical role, the German MEP stressed that the country’s location between Europe and Asia attracted competing interests and required careful positioning rather than impulsive decisions.

“As for Georgia, your geographic location is excellent - you are between Asia and Europe. At the same time, this is a region full of challenges; you are on the frontline, and all sides are interested in you”, he noted.

Von der Schulenburg further advised that Georgia should remain calm, wait for the geopolitical landscape to evolve, and make decisions based on national interest rather than outside pressure.

“So my advice is: stay away from the conflict. Maintain calm, do not make pointless decisions. The way the war is going, you will inevitably get some breathing space. The EU and the ambassadors who are currently hostile will be silent in six months. Wait for the situation to unfold and make decisions afterward from your own point of view”, he continued.

“Is it necessary to get involved in the war that the EU is fuelling? I believe not. Moldova will not join the EU either. We observe elections - I have monitored many elections, this is one of the UN mandates. The elections in Moldova were rigged, yet the EU declared them excellent elections. The EU is losing, and we are acting from a losing mentality; we have lost moral values, and that is very disappointing”, von der Schulenburg noted.

He also commented on the situation in the United States regarding Ukraine and noted that things were different there.

“When Zelenskyy met Trump and asked for Tomahawk-type missile systems for Kyiv, one of Zelenskyy’s arguments was that Ukraine, by fighting this war, is defending the United States. Trump replied that the United States is protected by the Atlantic Ocean but Europe cannot be protected by the Atlantic Ocean. We are the ones living next to war, and we are the ones who will pay the price for these wars”, the MEP concluded.
