MEP Tomasz Froelich accuses German Ambassador to Georgia of meddling in both German and Georgian domestic political affairs, calls for resignation

Tomasz Froelich, a member of the European Parliament from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, on Tuesday issued a sharp critique of Peter Fischer, the German ambassador to Georgia, accusing the diplomat of incompetence and meddling in both German and Georgian domestic political affairs.

The controversy concerns Fischer’s post about the results of the parliamentary elections in the German state of Baden‑Württemberg. In his message, the ambassador wrote that a large majority of voters supported parties backing liberal democracy and the European Union, while expressing concern about those in Georgia who place their hopes in AfD.

In an interview with Imedi TV, Froelich dismissed the ambassador’s assessment of the election results as factually flawed, pointing out the AfD’s significant growth in the region.

“To me, this is ridiculous. This was the best result the AfD has ever achieved in a state parliamentary election in Western Germany. We doubled our results, rising from 9.7% to 18.8%. If the ambassador thinks this is not a success, he is simply wrong. That’s why I no longer take this man seriously. I think he is doing a poor job overall”, he said.

The MEP argued that Fischer’s public commentary on partisan politics violates the core mandate of a diplomatic representative. According to Froelich, the ambassador’s focus should remain on representing the German state and its people rather than judging political parties.

“As an ambassador, he [Peter Fischer] should not comment on federal state elections in Germany. He should focus on representing Germany and the German people in Georgia. Instead, he does the opposite. He judges political parties in Germany while he is supposed to represent Germany. He does the same in Georgia by interfering in Georgia’s internal affairs. This shows a lack of respect for the country’s national sovereignty”, Froelich continued.

He also accused Fischer of interfering in Georgia’s internal affairs, calling it a “disrespect for the country's national sovereignty”.

“He [Peter Fischer] should respect the Georgian people, their will, and Georgia’s sovereignty. I believe he is a very bad ambassador and should resign. It is absolutely unacceptable for an ambassador to make such statements. He should not comment on such matters. The job of an ambassador is to represent Germany as a state”, the MEP stressed.

By criticising the AfD’s gains, Froelich argues the ambassador is failing to respect the will of the 18.8% of Baden-Württemberg voters who supported the party.
