PM downplays opposition’s regroupment ahead of elections, claims ruling party enjoys 60% approval rating

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Saturday claimed the ruling Georgian Dream party’s approval rating amounted to approximately 60 percent, and further pointed out that “no matter how the opposition groups or regroups, of course, our victory will not be in jeopardy”.
“The real situation about a month ago was such that not a single political party, with the exception of the [opposition] United National Movement [party], could overcome the electoral [5 percent] threshold. In such conditions, it is logical that they [the opposition parties] try to merge”, Kobakhidze said.
In his remarks about the political developments in the country ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for October 26, Kobakhidze noted that the United National Movement party was not shy away from uniting with [political] parties about which they previously spoke with “indecent words”, which “is a manifestation of lack of principle”.
“The most important thing for us is that our approval rating is approximately 60 percent. In such a situation, no matter how the opposition groups or regroups, of course, our victory will not be in jeopardy”, he concluded.
