Slovakia fully respects Georgia’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, says Slovak President

Slovakia fully respects the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders, said on Thursday Slovak president Peter Pellegrini following a meeting with his Georgian counterpart Mikheil Kavelashvili.

In his remarks, Pellegrini noted that the meeting focused on a wide range of topics across various areas.

“We addressed all important topics, particularly in light of recent violations of international law. During our discussions, we covered broad areas across various subjects”, he said.

“Currently, we are witnessing breaches of international law, with major powers attempting to redraw borders and thereby shaking the foundation of the international system’s stability. I am pleased to underline - and to reassure the Georgian president-- that Slovakia fully respects Georgia’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders”, he continued.

Pellegrini emphasised that “Bratislava is a place for dialogue and diplomacy, which are necessary to build trust between nations and states”.

“Effective diplomacy and open dialogue allow us to develop long-term solutions, long-term decisions regarding international challenges”, he said.

He further noted that “one of our priorities” in international politics was the policy of EU enlargement.

“There are countries expressing a desire to join the EU, and they are working on reforms to meet the necessary criteria. Enlargement is a complex process, but we must respect that it is a sovereign decision for any country to continue negotiations. It is up to the country to decide how it envisions its European perspective. We discussed these topics openly with the president. I reassured him that Slovakia is a part of the large European market and a member of the developed European family of nations. I am pleased that our bilateral relations are intensifying at the political level”, the Slovak president concluded.
