Georgian Parliament official: radicals’ actions on October 4 were prevented through active measures

Davit Matikashvili, the Chair of the Committee on Procedural Issues and Rules of the Georgian Parliament, on Saturday said that authorities had prevented a serious provocation during the October 4 events by taking active measures and discovering hidden weapons.

Matikashvili made the statement while commenting on the detention of wanted individual Beka Chulukadze, who is accused of acquiring and possessing weapons and explosives allegedly intended for sabotage.

“Radicals would most likely have actively used firearms as well if they had been given the opportunity, but all of this was prevented as a result of active measures”, Matikashvili said.

He argued that the discovery of weapons and explosives prevented a more serious incident and allowed investigators to identify additional suspects.

“We clearly saw what the radicals did on October 4 - how they organised an assault on the Presidential Palace, how they attempted to carry out a government overthrow, and how they would have likely actively used firearms in this process if they had been given the opportunity. However, as a result of active measures, all of this was prevented, and another person has been held accountable”, he concluded.

The State Security Service of Georgia on Friday detained a wanted Georgian citizen in the neutral zone between the Georgia-Armenia border checkpoints in connection with the October 4, 2025 case, which involves allegations of organised violence, an attempted seizure of the Presidential Palace, and preparations for acts of sabotage.

According to Imedi TV, the Georgian State Security Service detained Beka Chulukhadze.

On October 4, 2025, large-scale protests in Tbilisi escalated into a dramatic confrontation, as a group of radical demonstrators tried to storm the presidential palace. The unrest occurred on the same day Georgia held municipal elections.

Authorities detained five opposition figures, including Paata Burchuladze. Government officials described the events as a failed coup attempt orchestrated with foreign backing. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze called the protests “an attempted overthrow of the constitutional order”.
