Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Wednesday criticised the outgoing UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer over his policy toward Georgia, saying that the Georgian government remains in power and Georgian media continues operating, while Starmer was leaving politics.

In a social media message, Papuashvili commented on Starmer’s announcement that he is stepping down as Prime Minister and ending his political career.

“It is noteworthy that the person who, for the first time in the history of Georgia-United Kingdom relations, took openly hostile steps against Georgia is not only leaving office but is also leaving politics altogether”, Papuashvili said.

The Speaker further added that Starmer’s government sought first to undermine the Georgian government elected by citizens and later attempted to financially weaken and shut down independent Georgian media.

“By using financial sanctions as a political weapon, he first tried to bring down the government elected by the Georgian people and then attempted to financially destroy and shut down Georgia's independent media. However, fate had other plans - the Georgian government remains in place, the Georgian media continues broadcasting, while Starmer is the one leaving politics”, he concluded.
