Georgia’s railway freight turnover up 10% in H1, says Deputy Economy Minister

Tamar Ioseliani, the Georgian Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, on Sunday said that freight turnover on Georgia’s railway network increased by approximately 10 percent in the first six months of the year compared to the same period last year, marking a record performance.
In her interview with Imedi TV, Ioseliani noted that the railway sector has recorded a strong upward trend in freight transportation, including the highest figures seen over the past decade.
“Around seven million tonnes of cargo were transported over the past decade, making this a truly record-breaking result. At the same time, the new management of Georgian Railway is taking important additional steps to improve the railway’s efficiency and double its carrying capacity”, she said.
The Deputy Minister further highlighted the importance of the large-scale modernisation project currently underway on the Georgian Railway in the context of developing the Middle Corridor transport route.
“The upgrades currently being implemented on the Georgian Railway, along with investments aimed at modernising the system, will contribute to Georgia’s transport network as a whole, including the Anaklia Deep Sea Port, as well as new roads and railway lines”, Ioseliani concluded.
