Georgian PM says domestic opposition’s falsehoods main driver of social division

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Saturday said the primary cause of division in Georgian society was the spread of falsehoods by the opposition on a range of issues, calling on all political and public actors to act responsibly, tell the truth and promote unity rather than hatred.

In an interview with Imedi TV, Kobakhidze discussed sovereignty, national unity and social polarisation.

“Regarding sovereignty, national unity and division, when discussing these issues, it is very important that those who wish to participate in political or public processes base their actions on the truth. People with political interests may be tempted to lie in order to persuade society more effectively or advance a particular agenda”, he said.

The Prime Minister argued that what he described as persistent misinformation spread by the opposition had contributed significantly to social polarisation.

“What mainly causes division in our society is the amount of falsehood spread by the so-called opposition in Georgia on numerous issues. A great deal of misinformation is being circulated, and these constant lies and falsehoods are precisely what fuel division within society”, Kobakhidze said.

He also referred to comments made by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico following the 2024 assassination attempt against him, saying Fico had spoken about what he described as the influence of external forces on Slovak society.

“This is something imposed from outside. It is not unique to Georgia. I often recall the 10-minute video address recorded by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico after the assassination attempt against him. He spoke about what external forces were doing to Slovakia and Slovak society, how they were fostering hatred and division. The same thing is happening in our country”, he added.

Kobakhidze said overcoming social division required responsible conduct and honest communication from all sides.

“As for the division of society, the most important thing is for everyone to act responsibly, speak the truth to society and seek to promote relationships that strengthen social cohesion rather than sow hatred. This is what will contribute to the unity of our society”, he concluded.
