Ruling party official highlights “fundamental” position to protect future generation from “harmful” effects of LGBT propaganda

Mamuka Mdinaradze, the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party in the Parliament, on Friday said the ruling party’s “fundamental” position was to protect the future generation from the “harmful” effects of LGBT propaganda.

In his remarks, Mdinaradze emphasised the importance of distinguishing between protecting rights and countering what he described as “pseudo-liberal propaganda”.

Mdinaradze clarified that the decision to address LGBT propaganda through legislative measures was not made hastily but followed extensive discussions within the ruling team.

He cited increasing challenges, such as efforts in other countries to introduce reservations against terms like “mother” and “father” as contributing factors that necessitated action.

“I don't think it's a win-win position because the truth is on our side here. At Thursday's meeting of the [parliamentary] majority, we made this decision as a result of a rather long discussion, because the challenges are more intense than [it was] last year and these challenges increase on a yearly basis”, Mdinaradze noted.

He emphasised that this stance did not contradict the protection of rights but rather aimed to strike a balance between safeguarding societal values and upholding human rights.

“Our fundamental position is to protect our future generation from the harmful effects brought by the LGBT propaganda rather than the protection of rights”, Mdinaradze concluded.

Mdinaradze on Thursday announced the decision to prepare a legislative initiative that “will protect the public from pseudo-liberal ideology and its inevitable harmful consequences”.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Friday emphasised the importance of aligning any legislative effort with the principles outlined in the second chapter of the country’s constitution, which regulates human rights.
