Georgian FM expresses concern over orchestrated disinformation campaign, coordinated actions directed against country’s democratic institution

Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili on Thursday said that the Georgian Government was concerned about the orchestrated disinformation campaign and coordinated actions directed against the country’s democratic institutions.

In her address at the 32nd OSCE Ministerial Council meeting, Botchorishvili noted that these efforts aimed to undermine public trust, deepen polarisation and weaken the foundations of the state.

She noted that Russia’s aggression against Ukraine had further heightened the threats and vulnerabilities facing Georgia, particularly given that the country was not protected by any collective security umbrella.

“We are deeply concerned about orchestrated disinformation campaigns and coordinated actions by certain actors directed against Georgia’s democratic institutions and processes. These destructive efforts aim to undermine public trust, deepen polarization and weaken the foundations of the state. Unfortunately, we increasingly see attempts to misuse international organisations and institutions for such purposes, which damages their reputation and erodes public trust in them. Moreover, encouraging radicalisation within the country cannot and will not contribute to regional security”, Botchorishvili said.

“In response to hybrid threats, disinformation and any attempts to undermine our sovereignty, Georgia continues to reinforce stability through the protection of its democratic institutions and the strengthening of resilience. We believe that safeguarding democratic governance and resilience is a prerequisite for security and prosperity not only in Georgia, but across Europe”, she noted.

Botchorishvili once again welcomed the historic Agreement on Peace and the Establishment of Interstate Relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, reached in Washington through the mediation of the President of the United States Donald Trump.

“Georgia remains firmly committed to promoting peace and regional cooperation and stands ready to work with all partners to uphold international law, protect sovereignty and ensure lasting peace in the South Caucasus and the OSCE region”, the Foreign Minister concluded.
