Georgian Parliament official: EU double standards must be addressed to restore justice, political impartiality

Nikoloz Samkharadze, the Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Georgian Parliament, on Wednesday said that while creating cracks in the West was not beneficial for Georgia, efforts that encourage EU bureaucrats to act fairly and impartially were welcome.

In his interview with Imedi TV, Samkharadze criticised the European Union for applying double standards towards Georgia, arguing that EU statements often reflected political interests rather than facts or fairness.

“It has been confirmed what we were saying - that the EU applies double standards towards Georgia. When their [the EU’s] interest lies in a specific topic, they neither follow fairness nor facts, and make statements according to their own political interests”, he said.

The official emphasised the importance of restoring justice and impartiality in EU decision-making to maintain Georgia’s engagement with Europe.

“It is not beneficial for us to create cracks in the West. However, if this returns some EU bureaucrats to the framework of justice, political impartiality, and the unrestricted expression of free thought, it will be welcome, because such a Europe is our choice”, Samkharadze concluded.

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Wednesday said that concerns Tbilisi had been raising with Brussels for years were now being openly acknowledged by the European Union’s key partner and main security guarantor - the United States.
