Serbian President says mutual respect for territorial integrity between Serbia and Georgia will never change

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić on Thursday said that Serbia and Georgia share a strong mutual understanding, emphasising that adherence to the UN Charter and UN resolutions is fundamental to relations between countries. He made the remarks at a joint press conference following his meeting with Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili.

Vučić expressed gratitude to Georgia for respecting Serbia’s territorial integrity, noting that Serbia equally respects Georgia’s territorial integrity.

“This is a reality that will never change on either side. We represent relatively small and medium-sized countries. We uphold international law and will continue to defend it firmly in the future”, the Serbian President said.

The Serbian President announced that a meeting of the joint commission will be held soon, followed by the launch of strategic discussions on concluding a free trade agreement between Serbia and Georgia.

According to Vučić, such an agreement would be beneficial for both countries, expressing confidence that the free trade agreement could enter into force next year, citing ongoing serious and in-depth discussions.

“Our joint commission is led on our side by Minister Lazarević”, Vučić said, adding that Serbia expects to import products from Georgia at more favourable prices than from other markets. “This is a good opportunity for our businesses and entrepreneurs to explore markets for their products in Georgia”.

Vučić also highlighted Georgia’s strategic importance, describing it as a “beautiful country” with access to the Black Sea and borders with Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Armenia.

“Simply put, Georgia is an extremely important place in the world,” he said, noting that both countries understand the complexities of relations with major powers and share similar experiences.

The two sides discussed strengthening cooperation in agriculture and artificial intelligence, with Vučić expressing confidence that significant progress can be achieved in these areas. He also noted the potential for expanding cooperation in the defense sector.

“We maintain frequent political consultations and support each other not only within UN organizations but also at the level of other institutions”, Vučić said. “On the global stage, Georgia can count on Serbia’s support and vote in various international organizations, and Serbia can equally count on Georgia’s support”.
