Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Friday commented on the detention of Bacho Akhalaia, the former Defence Minister under the previous United National Movement Government, stating that any attempt to stage a revolution in the country will not be tolerated.
In his remarks, Kaladze emphasised that if such facts were confirmed, the state would always act strictly within the framework of the law.
“Before October 4, a campaign had been ongoing for several months, and these individuals were planning a government overthrow. On election day, they began seeking to carry out these plans. However, the relevant state agencies acted according to the law and prevented the attempted coup. An investigation has been launched, and many people have been detained. Yesterday, Bacho Akhalaia was also arrested. Let us wait for the results of the investigation”, the ruling party official said.
Kaladze added that prior to the elections, he and the Prime Minister had repeatedly called on those involved not to take steps that would violate the law, warning that the state would respond legally and that attempts to stage revolutions in the country would not be forgiven.
“Before the elections, we issued multiple warnings - both I and the Prime Minister - that no one should take steps that violate the law, because the state acts within the framework of the law, and any attempt to stage a revolution will not be forgiven. Nevertheless, these actions continued. Everyone who commits a crime will be held accountable”, Kaladze concluded.
Georgia’s State Security Service on Thursday arrested Bacho Akhalaia, the former Defence Minister under the previous United National Movement Government, in connection with the criminal case related to the events of October 4 in Tbilisi - the attempted government overthrow.
According to the Service, the investigation established that Akhalaia coordinated the October 4 events through internet-based applications.
