Georgian Parliament Speaker says minutes-long operation in Venezuela confirmed that EU no longer exists as guarantor of international order or as global geopolitical player

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Tuesday commented on recent global events, saying they have brought an important consequence for Georgian society by “finally removing masks” and once again provoking a process of lustration.

In a social media message, Papuashvili noted that, as in the past, global turbulence once again serves as the best catalyst for political “lustration”, revealing groups who, according to him, have lost hope in public support and instead cling to expectations of external forces.

“We have once again seen a group of people who first longed for Maidan, then Nepal, and now Venezuela. These are people devoted to someone else's flags, who, having lost hope in popular support, desperately rely on external actors and dream of bombs of democracy and rockets of liberalism”, the Speaker said.

He further added that political forces that have been “democratically defeated” see only one path to power - coming to government through external interference and violence. He drew historical parallels, stating that such figures have already been judged by history, while contemporary counterparts have been assigned their place by society.

Papuashvili also commented on recent developments in Venezuela, claiming that a “minutes-long operation” there confirmed that the European Union no longer exists as a guarantor of international order or as a global geopolitical player. He argued that Brussels, when necessary, does not hesitate to benefit from and exploit the erosion of the international order, adding that the EU’s actions toward Georgia violating international law serve as further proof.

“The international storm that unfolded in the very first days of January, which seems to be only gaining strength, has further reinforced our plan for 2026 - not to deviate from the policy of peace and not to become involved in others’ scenarios”, the Speaker continued.

He emphasised that the Government stands behind the will of the people, who, according to him, seek peace and prosperity in an independent and unified Georgia.

“Every word and action of foreign-worshipping, rootless politicians only confirms that achieving this goal is possible solely with the Georgian Dream, and no one and nothing will divert us from this path”, Papuashvili concluded.
