Georgian Parliament official says tensions among domestic radical groups rising ahead of Independence Day

Rati Ionatamishvili, the chair of the human rights and civil integration committee of the Georgian Parliament, on Thursday said that tensions among “radical groups” are likely to intensify as Georgia approaches Independence Day on 26 May.

In his remarks, Ionatamishvili noted that these groups are increasingly exposed after what he described as repeated failures of their “plans”.

He argued that efforts by such groups to “destroy the country at any cost” are still ongoing, but insisted that these plans “are not destined to be implemented”.

“May 26 will be a very painful and bitter defeat for the radical groups and processes as a whole. Of course, Saakashvili stands at the forefront of the foreign agent network. He is the biggest agent. Our society knows this very well too, so it no longer matters who stands on which step of this agent hierarchy - May 26th will be equally painful for everyone who goes against Georgia”, he concluded.
