“Take heart, my brothers and children: your Patriarch has not died, he sleeps”, says Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I at Patriarch Ilia II’s funeral

On the occasion of the funeral of His Holiness Ilia II, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Tbilisi, His All-Holiness Bartholomew I, Archbishop of Constantinople-New Rome and Ecumenical Patriarch, addressed the faithful, offering words of comfort and hope.
Addressing the congregation as “brothers and children”, the Ecumenical Patriarch offered words of comfort, emphasizing that the passing of the spiritual leader is not an end, but a transition to eternal life.
“Take heart, my brothers and children, your Patriarch and father has not died but is asleep. Regarding Patriarch Ilia, it is said that ‘the dead live’. I say this because the righteous, though departed, truly live. He lives in that place where incorruptible light shines, where the blessed behold the divine, and where all that is holy and invisible exists. He lives in the kingdom of the Holy Trinity, whose honour is celebrated here in Tbilisi through the magnificent Holy Trinity Cathedral”, he said.
He also stressed that Ilia II’s role did not end with his passing, but continues through his spiritual influence and closeness to God.
“Do not allow grief to overcome you. Bury it with reverence, and safeguard his counsel and teachings. This will be the greatest tribute you can offer him. Rejoice, for now your spiritual father, Patriarch Ilia II, is glorified in the dwelling of the living, stronger than when he walked among you. He intercedes boldly before God’s throne, bringing abundant help and blessings to you. Therefore, venerate his holy paternal hand with devotion, seek his prayers and blessing, and join us in bidding him farewell”, Bartholomew I concluded.
