Georgian FM highlights growing support for Georgia’s UN IDP resolution

Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili on Friday stated that the growing number of co-sponsors for the UN resolution on internally displaced persons reflects intensive, year-round diplomatic engagement with UN member states.
Botchorishvili’s comments followed the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the resolution on the status of IDPs and refugees from the Russian-occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions. Passed during the GA’s 80th session, the resolution received 107 votes in favour and 8 against.
“The UN resolution is a crucial document for Georgia”, Botchorishvili noted. “It represents one of the best opportunities to keep Georgia’s issues on the international agenda. The Georgian diplomatic service works tirelessly throughout the year to secure the highest possible level of support”.
She highlighted the growing international backing, adding, “we saw an increase in the number of co-sponsors again this year, which is highly significant. This is the direct result of our intensive engagement with UN member states. The strong support we received was once again reflected in the final vote”.
The Foreign Minister also emphasised that maintaining robust international solidarity remains vital for Georgia, particularly regarding the rights of IDPs and the humanitarian challenges stemming from the occupied territories.
“We will continue working with UN member states to ensure Georgia consistently enjoys this support”. she said. “We are addressing humanitarian issues and the rights of internally displaced persons - challenges that stem directly from the occupation and Russia’s policies toward our country”.
“It is vital that these issues remain on the international agenda and continue to receive support, because ultimately, this is about justice”, Botchorishvili concluded.
