Georgian Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Friday celebrated the 10th anniversary of the State Security Service, praising its role as a defender of peace, sovereignty, and democracy in the country.

Speaking at an event marking the 10th anniversary of the Service’s establishment, Papuashvili highlighted the Service’s critical importance amid a complex geopolitical landscape.

“Today, we celebrate the anniversary of the State Security Service, the defender of peace, sovereignty, and democracy in our country. Amid growing threats, the State Security Service protects our statehood and addresses serious challenges with high responsibility and professionalism. From day to day, the global security environment is becoming increasingly tense and complex. On the backdrop of a challenging geopolitical situation, the flexibility, full readiness, and professionalism of the State Security Service take on even greater critical importance”, the Speaker said.

He further emphasised the Service’s recent successes, including large-scale special operations in addressing diverse threats.

“Recent years have reminded us that international politics is driven not by altruism but by national interests, which complicates compromise and cooperation between countries. Accordingly, for any state institution, especially the main pillar of the country’s security system, the primary measure in decision-making must be our country’s national interests”, he continued.

He contextualised the agency’s work within a tense international environment, where national interests often overshadow cooperation.

“Your work requires great effort - vigilance, courage, dedication, and unwavering loyalty. In recent times, the results of your activities have been repeatedly demonstrated. It has been shown how successfully you handle various types of tasks, including large-scale special operations, whether responding to external threats, fighting corruption, preventing terrorist activities, or neutralising hybrid threats. Your daily work serves as an invisible shield protecting our citizens and institutions from internal and external threats. At the same time, by promoting peace, security, and stability in our country, it becomes possible to focus on Georgia’s development, including maintaining high economic growth, creating suitable conditions for business and tourism, and ensuring the well-being of citizens”, Papuashvili said.

The Speaker described the agency’s efforts as an “invisible shield” protecting citizens and institutions from internal and external threats, enabling economic growth, business development, tourism, and citizen well-being.

“Your successful activities also demonstrate that true security does not merely mean the absence of threats but the presence of trust in our institutions, democracy, and the people who protect them. Through your tireless work, integrity, love for the homeland, and loyalty, you have earned this trust”, the Speaker continued.

Papuashvili concluded by expressing gratitude and respect on behalf of the Parliament.

“On behalf of the Parliament of Georgia, I congratulate the leadership and every employee of the State Security Service on the anniversary of your service’s establishment. I affirm my deep respect and express great gratitude for your fruitful work, which strengthens our hope for a peaceful and secure future. May you always serve with such high standards”, he concluded.
