Georgian defence minister Irakli Chikovani on Thursday congratulated military personnel on the 35th anniversary of the Defence Forces, thanking each soldier, active military personnel, veterans, wounded and injured military personnel, cadets, conscripts and their family members for their honourable service.
In his speech, Chikovani remembered with special respect the fighters who died for Georgia’s territorial integrity, and honoured the memory of the heroes.
He emphasised that the Georgian army, which became a symbol of strength, sovereignty and national dignity, was a reflection of the history of the homeland.
“The profession of a soldier is a proud and at the same time responsible life choice. The heroism, devotion to the homeland, self-sacrifice and indomitable spirit of the Georgian soldier have made the history of the Defence Forces an example of awe and respect for everyone” Chikovani said.
He described the Defence Forces as one of the most reliable and trustworthy institutions of the country and highlighted the importance of its development, further pledging support to the military.
“Constant development is important for the Georgian Defense Forces, it must be transformed into a high-tech, mobile force capable of deterring aggression. This can only be achieved through thoughtful, consistent, and planned steps” the minister added.
“The government is sparing no effort to ensure that our army has proper equipment, modern technologies are introduced, and the social conditions of military personnel and their families are improved”, he continued.
Chikovani expressed his gratitude to the Georgian executive and legislative authorities, the leadership of the Defence Forces, and personally to the prime minister for their involvement and contribution to this process.
He also recalled the great role of the late Patriarch and spiritual father of Georgia, Ilia II, in caring for the spiritual strength of the Georgian army and military personnel, whom the army also saw off on his final journey with great sorrow and honour.
