Zurab Sichinava, Director of Anaklia Sea Port LLC, said on Tuesday that dredging works were actively underway at Anaklia Port, with a second dredging vessel operated by Jan De Nul Group, the Al-Idrisi, entering the port’s maritime area.
Sichinava said two Jan De Nul Group vessels, the Al-Idrisi and Tristao Da Cunha, would jointly carry out the dredging works.
“The Tristao Da Cunha, also operated by Jan De Nul Group, arrived a month ago and carried out dredging works at the base of the approximately one-kilometre-long breakwater. It has now moved to the entrance channel and turning basin of Anaklia Port to carry out further dredging works”, Sichinava said.
“The Al-Idrisi and Tristao Da Cunha are carrying out the works jointly, as a result of which the seabed at Anaklia will be dredged to a depth of 17.5 metres”, he added.
Sichinava said construction of the breakwater was also continuing on land.
“Ultimately, a 1,376-metre-long breakwater will be built. The breakwater and the seabed, which will be dredged to 17.5 metres, will enable the port to accommodate vessels with the largest cargo capacities operating in the Black Sea. The works will be completed according to schedule”, he said.
According to Sichinava, the state has opted for a “landlord” model for the development of Anaklia Port, under which the state owns the core port infrastructure while private partners are responsible for developing the landside facilities.
