Georgian Parliament official: Brussels ‘Eurocrats’ no longer represent European citizens’ interests

Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Committee on European Integration, said on Tuesday that Brussels’ “Eurocrats” had long ceased to represent the interests of European citizens, instead pursuing a narrow agenda that, he claimed, often aligned with informal interests.

Makhashvili’s comments came in response to recent remarks by Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar, who said it was difficult for Hungarians to understand why Brussels treated Hungary “so unfairly” over migration issues.

In his remarks, Makhashvili noted that the more frequently Hungary’s new Prime Minister came into contact with Brussels, the more likely he was to make similar statements.

“We have often been told not to pay attention to what members of the European Parliament or certain Eurocrats in Brussels say. The reason is simple: many people can see and understand that Brussels’ Eurocrats have long ceased to be interested in the interests of European citizens”, he said.

“They have their own narrow agenda, which usually aligns with the interests of informal influences, and they pursue it regardless of whether it conflicts with the interests of European citizens and European states. The more frequently Hungary’s new prime minister interacts with Brussels, it seems, the more often he will make similar statements”, Makhashvili concluded.
