Dispute value threshold at NBG’s dispute resolution commission increased to strengthen consumer protection
To strengthen consumer protection mechanisms, the Parliament of Georgia has adopted amendments to the Organic Law On the National Bank of Georgia and the Law of Georgia On Payment Systems and Payment Services in its third hearing.
By the decision of the Parliament of Georgia, the value threshold for the subject of a dispute to be reviewed by the Dispute Resolution Commission at the National Bank of Georgia (NBG) has been increased.
According to the amendment, a consumer has the right to apply to the Commission if the value of the subject of the dispute does not exceed 100,000 GEL, instead of the previously existing 50,000 GEL.
Furthermore, the legal aspects regarding the delivery of decisions made by the Dispute Resolution Commission have been clarified and refined at the legislative level.
These amendments represent a significant step forward for the credibility and innovative development of Georgia's financial sector.
The Dispute Resolution Commission at the National Bank of Georgia has been operational since 2023. The Commission is an independent body that ensures alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.
A consumer is authorized to file a complaint with the Commission if they believe that unauthorized operations (transactions carried out without their consent) occurred via payment card, internet banking, mobile banking, etc., or in cases of incorrectly executed payment transactions, incorrect deduction of transaction commissions, and other similar instances.
