Georgian Economy Minister: Georgia plays key role in regional energy connectivity

Mariam Kvrivishvili, the minister of economy and sustainable development of Georgia, on Thursday said the country was playing an important role in regional energy connectivity.

In her address at the energy summit held in the Greek capital, where she addressed key directions of Georgia’s energy sector, Kvrivishvili emphasised that a number of strategic infrastructure projects pass through Georgia, including the South Caucasus Pipeline and the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline projects.

“Transit volumes through the South Caucasus gas pipeline have been steadily increasing. In particular, the volume amounted to approximately 21.4 billion cubic meters in 2023, 22.8 billion cubic meters in 2024, and 22.9 billion cubic meters in 2025”, she said.

Kvrivishvili noted that around 12 billion cubic meters of this volume were supplied to European Union member states.

Speaking about Georgia’s regional importance, the minister also stated that the annual transportation volume of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline has increased to up to 60 million tons, while in recent years its actual throughput capacity averaged around 30 million tons per year.

The economy minister also highlighted the strategic and commercial potential of the Baku-Supsa pipeline, whose effective annual transportation capacity amounts to approximately 5 - 5.5 million tons.

“Georgia began taking effective steps years ago to strengthen its regional position and today plays an important role in energy connectivity. We are an integral part of supporting the European Union’s energy sector and its energy independence. At present, our top priority is the development of the national energy sector, with the greatest emphasis placed on the creation, modernization, and construction of infrastructure. This includes well-functioning electricity transmission networks and lines both for domestic consumption and for connecting with neighboring countries”, the economy minister said.

According to Mariam Kvrivishvili, when there was excess energy production, which was characteristic of the current period, electricity generated in Georgia was exported to neighbouring countries.

The minister emphasised the existing capacities, including 700 MW for electricity exports from Georgia to Turkey, 100 MW to Armenia, and 700 MW to Azerbaijan.

Kvrivishvili also noted that active work was underway on the flagship Black Sea submarine cable project connecting Georgia’s electricity system with the European Union market, which had been granted PMI status by the European Union.
