Georgian Economy Minister: EU’s PMI status confirms strategic importance of Black Sea submarine cable

Mariam Kvrivishvili, the minister of economy and sustainable development of Georgia, on Tuesday said the decision by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union to grant the Black Sea submarine cable project the status of Project of Mutual Interest (PMI) once again confirms its strategic importance not only for Georgia and the South Caucasus, but also for the European Union.
“The Black Sea submarine cable project is a critically important Georgian initiative that will serve our country’s national interests. The construction of the submarine cable has strategic importance for our country, for strengthening our energy sector, and for increasing export potential. On the one hand, the Black Sea submarine cable will ensure the export of energy generated in Georgia to the European Union, and at the same time, it will enhance the EU’s energy security”, she said.
“It will give a very significant boost to the energy sector of the South Caucasus in general. This is precisely confirmed by the decision of the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union to grant the Black Sea submarine cable PMI status, which once again proves its strategic importance not only for our country and the South Caucasus, but also for the European Union”, Kvrivishvili concluded.
