Georgian Foreign Affairs Ministry condemns illegal so-called elections in Russian-occupied Tskhinvali region

The Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned the so-called presidential elections held in the occupied Tskhinvali region on Friday, noting that they are contrary to international law and cannot confer legitimacy on the occupation regime.
According to the Ministry, the elections violate fundamental norms and principles of international law and cannot legitimise the occupation regime or alter the Tskhinvali region’s international legal status as an integral part of Georgia.
The Ministry also condemned Russia’s decision to hold elections to the State Duma in the occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions from September 18 to 20.
Georgia’s Foreign Ministry said the opening and operation of Russian polling stations on Georgian territory without the consent of the Georgian government constitute a violation of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and another manifestation of Russia’s policy aimed at the de facto annexation of Georgian regions.
The Ministry called on the international community to condemn Russia’s actions and ensure an appropriate international legal and political response.
Georgia continues to call on the international community to uphold its sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders and support the peaceful resolution of the conflict.
