Georgian Parliament Speaker: Ukraine viewed as EU’s frontline of defence shows cold-blooded International politics

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili said on Friday that Ukraine is viewed as a defensive line for the European Union and European countries.

Papuashvili made the comment in response to a statement by the deputy parliamentary leader of Germany’s ruling party, who said that “supporting Ukraine is the most cost-effective way to protect our security”.

In his remarks, the Parliament Speaker said the statement once again demonstrated how “cold-blooded” international politics can be.

“On numerous occasions, they have said that Ukraine is the frontline of defense for the European Union or European countries. As for it being cost-effective, yes, it is cost-effective because they themselves do not have to fight. It is not the blood of Germans, French or Lithuanians that is being shed. It is Ukrainian blood that is being shed to ensure the defense of the European Union”, he said.

“This shows how cold-blooded international politics is and how easy it is for some people to speak in such a tone, so directly and so shamelessly, saying that Ukraine is being used today to protect the European Union as cheaply as possible”, the Speaker continued.

Papuashvili further said that everyone should understand what fate would have awaited Georgia if the group of people who are still waving the flags of other countries today had been in Parliament and government.

“The first thing they would have done is rejoice at being on the frontline. Didn’t Zurab Japaridze say something similar?! - ‘Let’s help them somehow. We can at least hold back 20,000 soldiers here so they won’t have time to fight over there’”, he said.

“That is what they were prepared for. That is what Georgia was being prepared for. That is why there was an attempt to falsify the election results in 2020. After that came Mikheil Saakashvili’s covert entry into the country in 2021, carried out by foreign intelligence services following consultations in Brussels and Washington, so that, ultimately, Georgia would play exactly the role of opening an additional second front”, Papuashvili continued.

He added that such a scenario would have made the defense of the European Union cost-effective, while Georgia would have been left to stop 10,000, 20,000 or 30,000 Russian soldiers as others sat on podiums, at seminars or in various discussions, calmly talking about Georgia’s fate.

“Of course, they would have applauded us and rolled out the red carpet, but if this scenario had been implemented, there would not have been a single person left in this country to walk on that red carpet”, Papuashvili concluded.
