Georgian FM highlights multivector approach to foreign policy

Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili on Saturday said that Georgia’s foreign policy represents a practical example of multivector diplomacy, balancing national interests with international cooperation in a complex geopolitical environment.

Speaking at the Dubrovnik Forum, Botchorishvili highlighted Georgia’s strategic position at the intersection of different global interests and emphasised the country’s intention to act as a connecting hub rather than a dividing line between regions.

“Europe is strengthened through a broad network of reliable partners, and that Georgia is ready to contribute to this process. Brussels’ attempt to respond to Georgia with isolation is a strategic mistake. I think Georgia today is one of the best examples of what multivector diplomacy means in practice. Our history, geography, security environment, and economic interests force us, every day, to find the right balance between principles and pragmatism, between openness and security, and between national interests and international cooperation”, she said.

The Foreign Minister emphasised that modern international politics was characterised by rapid transformation, and that states were not passive observers but active participants shaping the emerging global order through their decisions.

“Dear colleagues, it is a great honour for me to address you within the framework of the Dubrovnik Forum. This beautiful city, with its history, openness, and resilience, is truly one of the best places to discuss the characteristics of modern international politics and the role of multivector diplomacy in today’s geopolitical reality. We often speak, as if from the role of observers, about a changing world, global transformations, and the formation of a new balance of power. In reality, none of us are external observers of these processes. We are participants in these changes. We make decisions that determine not only the future of our countries but also the international order that is currently being shaped before our eyes”, she noted.

“That is why I believe Georgia today is one of the best examples of what multivector diplomacy means in practice. Our history, geography, security environment, and economic interests force us every day to find the right balance between principles and pragmatism, between openness and security, and between national interests and international cooperation”, Botchorishvili continued.

She further noted that Georgia plays a constructive role as a connector state at a time when global supply chains and transport routes are becoming increasingly important for economic stability and security.

“Georgia is indeed located at a crossroads. Different powers, different visions, interests, and strategic ambitions intersect around us. Living in this reality requires particular caution, precision, and responsibility from us. Geography is a given that has historically posed many challenges for us, but it has also taught us how to act so that challenges do not turn into lost opportunities”, she said.

Botchorishvili stressed that in a world where economic competition shapes international politics and supply chain resilience was vital for global security, countries like Georgia that serve as connectors gain new strategic importance.

“Today, as centres of power multiply and economic competition increasingly shapes international politics, countries that serve as connectors rather than dividers become especially important. Georgia has precisely such a role. At a time when the world is seeking new economic routes and the resilience of supply chains has become a key element of global security, our country’s geographical location is gaining new strategic importance”, she concluded.
