Georgian Defence Minister: Didgori shows that united nation, strong state can overcome even greatest challenges

Georgian Defence Minister Irakli Chikovani said on Wednesday that Georgian society not only appreciates the importance of its centuries-old history, culture and state traditions, but also continues the country’s path of development in line with the ideals of King David IV the Builder, reflected in prudent policies and a firm commitment to strengthening the state.

Speaking at an event marking Didgoroba, the anniversary of the Battle of Didgori, Chikovani noted that the Battle of Didgori demonstrates that unity, strong state institutions and dedication to the country enable a nation to overcome even the most difficult challenges.

“Congratulations on Didgoroba, the enduring symbol of our nation’s unity, courage and glorious victory. For every Georgian, it is a sacred and deeply significant occasion that fills us with pride, strengthens our national consciousness and renews our faith in the future”, he said.

“On August 12, 1121, the defeat of a numerically superior enemy was not the only achievement. The victory also strengthened the unity of the country and laid the foundation for the golden age of a strong and prosperous Georgian state. The “Miraculous Victory” achieved on the Didgori battlefield was the result not only of the perseverance of the Georgian warriors, but above all of King David’s wise and far-sighted policies”, Chikovani continued.

The Defence Minister further highlighted that David the Builder began the unification of the country by building strong state institutions, reforming the army, strengthening national unity, fostering close cooperation between the Church and the state, and reinforcing spiritual and moral values across society.

He added that the holy King David devoted his exceptional military talent, statecraft and inner spiritual strength to strengthening the homeland, language and faith. It was on these solid foundations that the victory was made possible, ushering Georgia into a new stage of development.

“Georgian society today not only recognizes the importance of its centuries-old history, culture and state traditions, but also continues the country’s path of development guided by the ideals of David the Builder. This commitment is reflected in prudent policies and a firm determination to strengthen and consolidate the state”, Chikovani said.

“The spirit of the Georgian Army is rooted in our centuries-old military traditions and the heroism of our ancestors. Loyalty to the homeland, dignity, professionalism, responsibility and dedication are the values and legacy passed down to us by the warriors who secured victory on the Didgori battlefield. Upholding this legacy is a particular honor and responsibility for every Georgian service member”, he continued.

Chikovani emphasized that the Georgian state remains committed to preserving and strengthening the country’s historical heritage.

“The efforts of our Government and political team as a whole are focused on strengthening Georgia’s sovereignty, further developing state institutions, and safeguarding national identity, culture and traditional Christian values. This is a path rooted in the best lessons of our history and guided by a profound sense of responsibility toward our shared future”, he noted.

The Defence Minister concluded by emphasizing that Didgori teaches that when a nation is united, state institutions are strong, and society is imbued with unwavering loyalty to its country, even the greatest challenges can be overcome.
