Georgian Parliament official: deep state forces seek to undermine Georgia’s economic progress

Davit Matikashvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Committee on Procedural Issues and Rules, on Friday accused external forces, referred to as the deep state, of attempting to undermine Georgia’s ongoing economic progress.

Speaking to journalists, Matikashvili argued that the ruling government’s peace-oriented and people-centric policies serve as a major obstacle to these forces' objectives in the region.

“These forces are deeply irritated by the economic advancement our country is experiencing. The government’s peaceful policy, focused entirely on the interests of our people, creates a massive barrier to their plans in Georgia. That is why hitting tourism, a flagship sector of our economy that generates substantial national wealth, is so crucial for them”, he said.

Matikashvili’s remarks follow a recent press briefing by the Prime Minister of Georgia, who outlined a newly uncovered scheme specifically targeting the country’s economy.

According to executive leadership, this coordinated campaign relies on a dual strategy - spreading deliberate disinformation while simultaneously fueling anti-Russian sentiment to destabilise key sectors like tourism and investor confidence.

Government officials maintain that despite these external pressures, economic stability and national interests remain top priorities for the current administration.
