Georgian Parliament official: Garibashvili’s statement fits scenario aimed at undermining Government, advancing revolutionary process

Gia Volski, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party and First Vice Speaker of Parliament, on Friday said that a “reckless” or misleading statement by imprisoned former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili regarding the death of human rights activist Lazare Jorbenadze aligned with what he described as a broader campaign aimed at discrediting the Government and fueling a “revolutionary process.”

Volski’s remarks followed the publication of another letter by Garibashvili, in which he argued that questions surrounding the actual cause of Jorbenadze’s death remained unanswered.

According to Volski, recent statements about the case had shifted attention toward Garibashvili, whom he described as the primary source of information for opposition figures.

He argued that the issue extended beyond Jorbenadze’s death and formed part of what he called a wider “propaganda campaign.”

“This concerns other suicides, unrest in Georgia, claims that we killed Abkhazians during the war, and statements suggesting that Ukrainian drones should be sent toward Abkhazia because fuel had allegedly been supplied there. All of this is part of a broader plan aimed at shaping attitudes toward Georgia, including internationally”, Volski said.

“In this context, Irakli Garibashvili’s reckless statement - whether made without proper consideration or as a result of being misled - fits into a broader scenario designed to damage the Government and advance the revolutionary process, a subject we have discussed repeatedly and for which we have seen numerous examples”, he added.

Questioning is currently underway at the Main Division of the Police in connection with statements made regarding the death of Lazare Jorbenadze. It has been confirmed that opposition figures have no information about Jorbenadze’s case and that their primary source is Irakli Garibashvili.
