Baird Maritime: Anaklia Port expected to become key maritime gateway of Middle Corridor

The international maritime publication Baird Maritime on Wednesday reported that the Anaklia Deep Sea Port is expected to become one of the key maritime gateways of the Middle Corridor - the trade route connecting Europe, Central Asia, and regions beyond - as intensive dredging works continue.

According to the article, the Belgian company Jan De Nul has begun seabed dredging for the construction of the breakwater, entrance channel, and turning basin at the port on Georgia’s Black Sea coast.

Baird Maritime noted that the port will increase Georgia’s ability to receive large container ships and create additional capacity for dry and bulk cargoes.

“It is expected that the port will become one of the key maritime gateways of the Middle Corridor - the trade route connecting Europe, Central Asia, and the regions beyond. The Anaklia deep-water port, located on Georgia’s Black Sea coast, will increase the country’s capacity to receive large container ships and create additional capacities for dry and bulk cargoes. At Jan De Nul they note that the port will encourage the development of the Middle Corridor, which passes through the Caspian and Black Seas and is considered an alternative to Russia’s northern route or the southern route via the Suez Canal”, the article said.

The vessels Tristão da Cunha and Al-Idrisi are deepening the entrance channel to 17.5 meters, enabling the port to accommodate large Panamax and Post-Panamax vessels.

Construction also includes a turning basin for safe manoeuvring and a 1,380-meter-long breakwater being built in a joint venture with the local company Prime Concrete.
