Georgian Economy Minister: Georgia’s ports operating at record levels, Anaklia Port to launch in 2029

Georgia’s port sector is operating at record levels, while improvements in port management and operational efficiency are enabling the country’s ports to effectively handle growing cargo volumes, Georgian Economy Minister Mariam Kvrivishvili said on Monday.
Addressing the opening of the Georgia International Maritime Forum in Batumi, Kvrivishvili noted that the government was actively cooperating with the private sector to make full use of Georgia’s port capacity.
“One of the key projects for developing Georgia’s maritime capabilities is the Anaklia Deep Sea Port. We are developing Anaklia under the so-called landlord model, which balances the interests of the state and the private sector and creates opportunities for broad regional and international participation”, Kvrivishvili said.
She added that the port is expected to begin operations in 2029, with an initial annual capacity of at least 600,000 TEUs and approximately 10 million tons of dry cargo. The state will invest $700 million in the project, while private-sector investment will bring the total investment to $1.1 billion.
“Infrastructure is only one component. For the competitiveness of the Middle Corridor, coordinated schedules, simplified procedures, and compatible digital systems are equally important. We are ready to work together with partner countries, international organisations, and the private sector to ensure that the Middle Corridor becomes a single, seamless, efficient, and reliable route,” Kvrivishvili continued.
She stressed that human capital was one of the maritime sector’s key resources.
“Today, we have more than 21,000 certified Georgian seafarers, compared with approximately 8,000 in 2012. Their contribution to Georgia’s economy amounts to approximately ₾1 billion”, the Minister said.
Kvrivishvili emphasised that government investment of more than ₾50 million in maritime education since 2012 had been one of the foundations of this growth.
“Today, Georgian seafarers are recognised by 75 leading maritime flags worldwide, including those of the European Union”, she concluded.
