Kakha Kaladze, Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Monday accused the “deep state” of using what he described as “dirty tactics” to defeat political parties when its representatives are unable to win elections, calling the phenomenon a major threat to the modern world.
Kaladze made the remarks while commenting to the media on the possible banning of Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
He said this was not the first time an informal governing force had sought to undermine a political party elected by the public.
“When they see that representatives of the ‘deep state’ cannot win in a country, they try to defeat specific political parties through dirty methods”, Kaladze said.
He cited Romania as an example, referring to a case in which, according to him, a presidential candidate won the election but was subsequently subjected to a series of allegations and prevented from participating in the second round.
“We know what this points to”, Kaladze said, adding that people in Europe had also begun to “wake up” and recognize the challenges they face. As a result, he said, they are making decisions that serve their own interests.
