Georgian PM vows “fundamental steps” for University reform

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Thursday announced the necessity of “drastic, fundamental steps” toward university reform to establish a “qualitatively different system of higher education” in the country, one that aligns with modern international standards.

The PM made the statement during the presentation of the education reform project.

Kobakhidze emphasised Georgia’s rich academic and university traditions, which span centuries, citing the historical significance of the Ikalto and Gelati Academies.

He noted that the development of the modern education system began with the founding of Tbilisi State University approximately a century ago, followed by the expansion of the university system.

Kobakhidze acknowledged that the Soviet period saw a time of “intensive development”, with the establishment of institutions like the State Medical University, Technical University, and several regional universities.

However, the PM pointed out the severe impact the 1990s crisis had on the country's education system, including higher education.

The economic turmoil of that period led to a crisis across all sectors, leaving a “very heavy imprint” on the state of education.

“We want to rectify this situation, and for this, we believe that drastic, fundamental steps must be taken to achieve a qualitatively different system of higher education in our country that will be in line with contemporary standards”, Kobakhidze said.

Regarding the implementation of the new project, the Government head stated that the document would undergo public discussion before taking its final shape.
