Georgian PM: European bureaucracy still resentful toward Georgians for supporting Georgian Dream Gov’t

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Tuesday said Georgia has made no progress in its relations with the European Union, mainly due to the persistent attitude of European bureaucrats toward the Georgian people and the Government elected by them.

In his interview with the Georgian Public Broadcaster, Kobakhidze expressed hope that these attitudes would change in the future.

“Unfortunately, we have made no progress in Georgia-EU relations. The main reason is that the attitude of the European bureaucracy toward the Georgian people and the government they elected has not changed. This is the main cause of the current situation. The core issue is that the European bureaucracy does not recognise Georgian democracy and the democratic choice of the Georgian people”, the PM said.

“Everything unfolded around the 2024 elections, when the EU Ambassador openly expressed a position, urging voters to go to the polls and support the opposition against the Georgian Dream Government. The European bureaucracy, together with the radical opposition, lost the elections and has yet to come to terms with it. In practice, everyone recognises the authorities, as evidenced by official events in which the Georgian Government regularly participates. However, recognition is not the point - they continue to express resentment toward the Georgian people for once again supporting the Georgian Dream Government and the course the country has taken”, Kobakhidze concluded.
