Georgia excels in public accountability, joins Europe’s top five

The European Anti-Corruption Research Centre has published an extensive report on the causes and trends of corruption risks across Europe.
The study covers all 41 EU member states and candidate countries and was prepared at the request of the European Union within the framework of the European Commission’s Research and Innovation Programme.
Among other topics, the report analyses governance frameworks regulating public accountability in European countries. Georgia achieved a strong position in the ranking.
Using a 100-point assessment system measuring the comprehensiveness of public accountability regulation, Georgia scored above 75 points, placing it among the top five countries in Europe.
In the ranking, Georgia outperformed 28 Schengen Area and EU member states, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Hungary, Greece, Croatia, Iceland, Cyprus, Austria, Malta, and Luxembourg.
The assessment is based on data from the EuroPAM database on transparency and accountability, which evaluates the comprehensiveness of national legal frameworks across five key areas of administrative transparency and accountability: financial disclosure of public officials, conflict of interest regulation, political finance, freedom of information, and public procurement regulation.
The report on corruption risk causes and trends in Europe was prepared with the involvement of the European Institute for Policy Analysis as part of the EU-funded project titled Closing the Gap Between Evidence, Regulation, and Impact in Anti-Corruption Policies.
