Georgian Parliament Vice Speaker says EU bureaucratic governance leading Europe toward serious consequences

Giorgi Kakhiani, the Vice Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, on Thursday said he is confident that “common sense will prevail” in the European Union and Europe as a whole, stressing that Georgia’s aspiration toward EU membership has not weakened in any way.

In his interview with Imedi TV, Kakhiani noted that the country continues to carry out its responsibilities and remains firmly committed to its European course.

“Our foreign policy course is integration into the European Union. In this direction, we are working on a daily basis, including fulfilling the obligations defined by the Association Agreement. Of course, at the same time, we also see that there are issues within the European Union that are not unfolding the way we imagine Europe and European values to be. We see bureaucratic governance that is leading Europe toward very serious consequences”, the Parliament official said.

He added that similar concerns have been voiced by the President of the United States.

“Of course, all of this also creates a certain skepticism toward the European Union, but we should not look at it this way. The European Union is not what today’s bureaucrats portray it to be. There are different views and opinions there as well, and they look at the development of the European Union in a completely different way”, he concluded.
