Georgian Parliament official: German Ambassador’s activity contradicts traditional Georgian-German diplomatic relations

Rati Ionatamishvili, the chair of the Georgian Parliament’s committee on human rights protection and civil integration, on Wednesday said that the actions of Peter Fischer, the German ambassador to Georgia, did not reflect the longstanding diplomatic traditions between Georgia and Germany.
In his interview with Imedi TV, Ionatamishvili stated that bilateral relations between Georgia and Germany had a long and valuable history, making recent developments particularly concerning.
“The relations between German and Georgian diplomacy are very precious to us and have a rather rich and interesting bilateral history”, he said.
The official argued that the ambassador has aligned himself with what he described as the agenda of the radical opposition and broader Eurocrats narratives.
“The German ambassador is indeed violating not only the Vienna Convention, but even elementary diplomatic ethics, when he not only becomes a supporter of the radical opposition’s agenda and narrative, but sometimes even becomes an encourager of messages or information containing violence - something that the radical opposition is often engaged in”, Ionatamishvili noted.
Additionally, he suggested that public perception in Georgia did not view the ambassador’s activities as contributing positively to bilateral relations, but rather as counterproductive.
“It is a regrettable fact and it really does not correspond to or suit diplomatic standards. However, it is also a fact that this person often repeats the narrative of European bureaucracy in general. If we ask our society whether this person serves the strengthening and deepening of Georgian-German relations, the answer will naturally be that in this regard his activity is not only unremarkable, but is in fact anti-activity”, he stressed.
“He is in line with the narrative of those Eurocrats who are directly trying to undermine our sovereignty and sometimes appear as sponsors of violence. Therefore, society knows the answer to this question very well. This person is not repeating the spirit of Georgian-German cooperation, but rather the spirit of those resolutions that we see from Yuknevichienė, and unfortunately, he is more in the service of the collective Yuknevichienė than in the service of Georgian-German relations”, Ionatamishvili concluded.
