Georgian Parliament Speaker: external forces must accept Georgia has national Government acting in national interests

Georgian Parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Friday said that the country’s sole benchmark in international relations is its national interests, asserting that Georgia communicates on these terms with all international partners, including the United States and the European Union.

In his remarks, Papuashvili noted that external forces must accept that Georgia is governed by a national leadership dedicated exclusively to the country’s sovereign priorities.

“The experience of recent years, especially since the specific onslaught on Georgia began, has taught us one thing, that our only benchmark is our country’s national interests”, Papuashvili said.

The speaker further emphasised that the government is fully ready to cooperate on matters that align with Georgia’s domestic progress, but will firmly reject actions that threaten stability.

He stressed that Georgia will not take paths that lead to confrontation, claiming that the European Union has spent the last few years pushing the country toward escalation with Russia, a direction the current government strongly rejects. He also stated that the same principles apply to safeguarding the economic well-being of the population.

Papuashvili concluded by stressing that Georgia’s independent policy will remain steadfast as long as the current leadership is in place. He declared that foreign forces must come to terms with the fact that Georgia has a national government acting in national interests.
