Patriarch Ilia II remembered worldwide for spiritual leadership

The passing of His Holiness and Beatitude, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II, has sparked an outpouring of condolences from world leaders, diplomats, and religious figures across the globe, underscoring his profound spiritual authority and the deep international respect he commanded.

The Embassy of the United States in Georgia expressed its grief, stating: “We express our deep sorrow over the passing of His Holiness, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Ilia II. His life and immense contribution will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in peace”.

A similar message came from the Embassy of Turkey, which emphasized the scale of the loss:

“We express our deep sorrow over the passing of His Holiness and Beatitude, Ilia II. His passing is a great loss, as for many years he was the spiritual father of the Georgian people, a pillar of peace, unity, and moral values”.

The statement further added, “We extend our sincere condolences to the Georgian people, the Georgian Orthodox Church, and all who mourn his passing… and express our heartfelt sympathy and solidarity”.

From Israel, high-level officials also paid tribute. The minister of foreign affairs described Ilia II as “a great leader, a friend of Israel and the Jewish people”.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of His Holiness Ilia II… I extend my condolences to the Georgian Orthodox Church and the Georgian people. May God bless his memory and may his legacy endure forever”, the Israeli ambassador to the country said.

The Embassy of Israel in Georgia underscored his broader role, noting that his name was inseparably linked with national unity, the revival of the country’s spiritual life, and the consolidation of society.

European leaders echoed these sentiments.

“His lifelong dedication to faith, unity, and spiritual strength… leaves an indelible legacy”, the Latvian foreign minister noted.

“I express my deep condolences to the Georgian Church, the Georgian people, and all my dear friends from Georgia”, the Latvian ambassador said.

Germany’s ambassador highlighted his pastoral role - “As a spiritual father, he guided the nation in both joy and sorrow… May His Holiness rest in peace”.

The Czech ambassador also extended condolences, noting that It was a great honor to meet him and concluding with a prayer that “God grant him eternal memory”.

Messages from Denmark, Lithuania, and the Netherlands emphasised both grief and respect.

“The Embassy of Denmark expresses deep sorrow… May God grant him eternal rest”, the Danish Embassy stated.

Lithuania’s ambassador described his service as “invaluable,” while representatives of the Netherlands expressed condolences and wished strength to the Georgian people “during this difficult time”.

“His Holiness will always remain the spiritual father of the nation and a symbol of survival in difficult times”, Poland’s Embassy noted.

The European Union also stressed his historical importance, noting that he played a special role in preserving national identity and faith and remained a symbol of unity for believers.

Condolences also came from the leadership of the United Arab Emirates, where resident Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and other senior officials sent official letters of sympathy to Georgia’s leadership, underscoring the global scale of mourning.

“I sincerely extend my condolences to the people of Georgia”, Sweden’s ambassador stated.

Religious leaders offered particularly profound reflections on his life and legacy.

Metropolitan Epiphanius I of Ukraine, head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, said: “He was a spiritual leader who devoted his life to serving God, the Church, and the Georgian people,” emphasizing that Ilia II “remained a spiritual guide for many believers” and “inspired many people to overcome hardships and maintain hope even in the most difficult times”.

He also noted the Patriarch’s support for Ukraine and concluded with a prayer: “May the Lord grant rest to the soul of Ilia II. Eternal and blessed memory to him”.

“The Patriarch of Georgia, Ilia II, has passed away. Eternal be his memory”, the Archbishop of Helsinki stated, honoring his contribution to both Church and society.

Patriarch Daniel of Romania described him as “a respected figure of contemporary Orthodoxy and a steadfast confessor of the faith”, adding that he “wisely shepherded the Georgian Orthodox Church through periods of both trial and renewal”.

“It is with deep sorrow that we received the news of the passing of our beloved brother in Christ, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Ilia II of blessed memory - a venerable personality of contemporary Orthodoxy and a firm confessor of the faith. On behalf of the hierarchs, clergy, and faithful of the Romanian Orthodox Church, we extend our condolences to the Holy Synod and the entire Georgian Orthodox Church. We pray to our Lord Jesus Christ to grant rest to his soul in the dwelling places of the saints, where there is no pain, nor sorrow, nor sighing, but life everlasting. May his memory be eternal from generation to generation”, the Romanian Patriarch said.
