For half a century, the name of Ilia II was firmly associated with the protection of faith, traditions, and national identity. With his passing, an era has come to an end - that of a spiritual leader who guided the nation to safety on numerous occasions, said on Wednesday Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder and Honorary Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, and his spouse Ekaterina Ivanishvili in a letter.
“We feel immense sorrow and grief over the passing of Georgia’s spiritual father, His Holiness and Beatitude, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Ilia II. We extend our condolences to the Georgian Orthodox Church on this tremendous loss. Naturally, we also offer our condolences to all of Georgia, to every Georgian, to the entire nation, as with His Holiness and Beatitude, our country and people have lost a steadfast pillar of peace, wisdom, and faith - a spiritual father who instilled hope and united our people even in the most difficult times”, the letter said.
“Georgia has lost a remarkable individual, distinguished by paternal care, who encouraged each person toward a better path through both word and deed. His life and work have been, and will remain, a symbol of devotion and selfless service to his people and country”, the statement continued.
Ivanishvili further added that for half a century, Ilia II’s name was inseparably linked with the protection of faith, traditions, and national identity.
“With his passing, an era in our country’s history has ended - the era of a man who honorably and tirelessly fulfilled the difficult, responsible, yet noble mission of being Georgia’s spiritual father. It marks the end of an era of a leader who repeatedly guided us to safety and left a special light in the heart of every citizen of our country. His kindness, wisdom, and words will forever remain in our memory as an example of true humility and love for both people and homeland”, the letter pointed out.
Once again, we extend our condolences to all of Georgia, share in this profound grief, and pray for the repose of his soul. Eternal memory to His Holiness and Beatitude, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Ilia II”, the statement concluded.
