Georgian PM says Patriarch’s death closes monumental chapter in Georgian Church and state history

Georgian prime minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday extended his deepest condolences to all of Georgia on the passing of the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II, stressing that the Patriarch’s contributions to preserving national identity, safeguarding traditions, and strengthening statehood were invaluable.
In his statement, Kobakhidze noted that Ilia II, with his wisdom, love for his neighbour, boundless patience and ability to forgive, was able to strengthen faith in the hearts of the Georgian people.
“I extend my condolences to all of Georgia on the passing of the spiritual father of our nation, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II. With his passing, a great era in the history of our Mother Church and the Georgian state has come to an end. His Holiness’ shepherding coincided with some of the most challenging and transformative years for our country. Throughout this historic journey, he remained a spiritual guide and a symbol of unity for our people. Through his wisdom, love for others, boundless patience, and capacity for forgiveness, he strengthened faith in the hearts of Georgians”, he said.
“His service goes far beyond the purely spiritual sphere. The contributions of Ilia II to maintaining national identity, preserving traditions, and reinforcing statehood are priceless. Through his selfless devotion to God, the homeland, and humanity, he has secured an enduring place among the greatest figures in our centuries-long history. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the Georgian Apostolic Autocephalous Orthodox Church, the Holy Synod, the clergy, the faithful, and every citizen. It is the duty of our generation and all future generations to honor and safeguard the extraordinary legacy of our spiritual father. May his memory be eternal", the prime minister concluded.
