Georgian culture minister Tintin Rukhadze on Sunday held a meeting with UNESCO director general Khaled El-Enany during her working visit to France, focusing on cultural heritage matters and future cooperation.

The meeting highlighted the role of UNESCO in preserving and promoting Georgia’s cultural heritage.

During the discussions, both sides emphasised UNESCO’s contribution to safeguarding Georgia’s rich and diverse cultural traditions.

Particular attention was given to recent international recognition, including the inclusion of Georgian wheat culture - its traditions and rituals - on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2025.

The parties also reviewed upcoming nominations, notably the planned submission of traditional Georgian equestrian games such as Isindi, horse polo, Kabakhi, and Marula for 2026.

Additionally, preparations are underway to nominate the Dmanisi Hominid site for inclusion on the World Heritage List.

Future cooperation initiatives were also discussed, including Georgia’s participation in global cultural events such as the World Day for Cultural Diversity and the International Day of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2026, as well as joint cultural activities with Hungary in 2027.

The importance of Georgia’s involvement in international platforms like MONDIACULT 2025 was highlighted.

The meeting also covered ongoing cultural heritage projects, including the rehabilitation of Gelati Monastery and cooperation with UNESCO missions in Mtskheta.

Both sides underlined the importance of protecting cultural heritage in crisis situations and recognised culture as a key factor in sustainable development and peacebuilding.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Georgian side invited the UNESCO Director-General to visit Georgia, with an agreement reached for a future working visit.
