Georgian PM says country’s strategy of peace and connectivity delivering results

Georgian prime minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Friday emphasised that Georgia’s current foreign policy strategy - centred on peace, economic connectivity, and stability - has proven successful in an increasingly volatile global landscape.

Speaking at the ongoing Antalya Diplomacy Forum, the prime minister voiced significant concerns regarding the current state of international institutions.

He argued that some multilateral organisations, which should theoretically protect national sovereignty, are instead creating challenges for individual states.

“Georgia’s strategy is clear: we are working to preserve peace, guarantee stability, and foster prosperity. We are dedicated to enhancing our country’s connectivity and deepening economic relations with our partners. Current reality proves that this approach is yielding results”, Kobakhidze said.

He argued that, in some cases, informal influences are becoming visible within formal international institutions, which he said can lead to negative outcomes.

“In your opening address, you touched on multilateral organisations. In this regard, I would like to say that in our opinion, informal influences are also evident in these formal organisations. This is very noticeable to us. The result of this is quite negative: specific multilateral organisations, instead of protecting sovereignty, create challenges for countries. A good example of this is Georgia. In this direction - in terms of ensuring our sovereignty and independence - we are facing certain challenges from some multinational organizations. This is one of the issues that needs to be changed”, he continued.

The government head emphasized the importance of strengthening multinational organisations, adding this must be done to restore rules-based international law.

“We all remember such phrases as rules-based international order, values-based international order. Unfortunately, this is already a thing of the past. Many politicians talk about this. It is really important to strengthen multinational organisations. First of all, this must be done to restore rules-based international law. This is a very difficult task and we will have to work hard for this”, he concluded.
