Georgian Economy Minister: Anaklia Port development must ensure state leadership while creating competitive environment for international partners

Georgia considers it essential that the development of the Anaklia Deep Sea Port be based on a model that ensures the state’s leading role in strategic infrastructure while creating a competitive environment that accommodates the interests of multiple partner countries and international companies, said on Monday Georgian Economy Minister Mariam Kvrivishvili.

In her remarks, Kvrivishvili noted that the construction of the Anaklia Deep Sea Port is of strategic importance for strengthening Georgia’s transit role and ensuring the country’s sustainable economic development.

“We would like to share with the public an important decision adopted by the Government of Georgia regarding the construction of the Anaklia Deep Sea Port. As you know, the project is of paramount importance for strengthening Georgia’s transit function and, consequently, for the country’s sustainable economic development. The Middle Corridor is playing an increasingly significant role in connecting East and West. It has become the shortest and one of the most important trade and economic routes between Europe and Asia, with Georgia serving as a key link. Our port infrastructure is currently operating at maximum capacity, with growth recorded across all types of cargo. In January-April 2026, cargo turnover increased by 21% compared to the same period last year, while over the past four years, total cargo volumes have grown by 46%”, she said.

The Minister noted that over the past year, the Georgian Government had developed a clear vision and strategy for the further development of the country's transport and logistics sector, fully aligned with the plans of Middle Corridor countries to expand transport infrastructure capacity.

She added that the Government plans to invest $7 billion in the sector’s strategic infrastructure by 2032, including the construction of the Anaklia Deep Sea Port, the modernisation of Georgia’s railway network, and the completion of the country’s expressway system.

Kvrivishvili further highlighted the unprecedented international interest in the Anaklia project, attributing it to the Government’s policies, reforms, and coordinated cooperation with partner countries.

“As a result, it is clear that the Anaklia project has evolved from a regional initiative into a strategic infrastructure project of international significance. Given the growing interest from numerous countries and international companies, it is fundamentally important for Georgia that Anaklia’s development be based on a model that ensures the state’s leading role in developing strategic infrastructure while creating a competitive environment where the interests of multiple partner countries and companies can be taken into account”, the Minister concluded.
