Georgian Deputy Economy Minister: Anaklia Port development crucial to boost cargo throughput, Black Sea competitiveness

Tamar Ioseliani, Georgian Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, said on Tuesday that the development of the Anaklia Deep Sea Port was of paramount importance for attracting more cargo and strengthening Georgia’s competitiveness in the Black Sea region.

Speaking about the project, Ioseliani said construction was progressing according to plan and schedule, while the scale of the works had increased further.

“The construction of the Anaklia Deep Sea Port has entered an active phase. Construction is proceeding according to plan and schedule. The second dredging vessel has arrived, and work is therefore actively underway both on seabed dredging and the construction of the breakwater”, she said.

“In general, the development of the Anaklia Deep Sea Port is of paramount importance, as it will allow us to accommodate larger vessels, handle more cargo and, accordingly, make our country more competitive in the Black Sea region”, Ioseliani added.

She noted that seabed dredging was actively underway at the Anaklia Port, with the second dredging vessel, Al-Idrisi, having arrived in the waters of the future port.

According to Ioseliani, dredging along the foundation of the approximately one-kilometer-long breakwater has already been completed, while dredging of the port’s water area, including the entrance and return channels, has begun.

The works are being carried out jointly by Al-Idrisi and Tristao Da Cunha, dredging vessels operated by Belgian company Jan De Nul Group.
